A Planner at Interstate Engineer helps turn ideas into places. In this role, you’ll conduct planning studies, analyze data, and prepare deliverables that support urban planning and land use projects across the communities we serve. Key Responsibilities:
Conduct planning studies, including land use analysis, zoning assessments, and environmental impact reviews, to inform project recommendations.
Analyze spatial and demographic data using GIS software (e.g., ArcGIS) to support planning decisions and create visual representations.
Prepare planning documents, such as comprehensive plans, site plans, and zoning reports, ensuring compliance with regulations and alignment with the firm’s brand standards as guided by the Community Engagement Specialist.
Coordinate with the Community Engagement Specialist to facilitate public meetings, workshops, and hearings, gathering community input to inform planning proposals.
Collaborate with Surveyors, CADD Designers, Landscape Architects, and Environmental Specialists to integrate spatial, design, and environmental data into planning projects.
Assist in developing project schedules, budgets, and timelines, working with Funding Specialists to incorporate funding priorities into planning processes.
Ensure all planning activities comply with local, state, and federal regulations, as well as company standards.
Mentor Juniors Planners, providing training on planning techniques, software tools, and stakeholder engagement, in collaboration with the Community Engagement Specialist.
Participate in professional development to enhance planning skills, preparing for advancement to roles such as Senior Planner/Planning Manager or Community Engagement Specialist through cross-training in stakeholder engagement strategies.
Document and address community concerns, ensuring stakeholder feedback is integrated into planning processes, leveraging insights from the Community Engagement Specialist’s feedback mechanisms.
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in Urban Planning, Geography, Environmental Studies, or a related field.
2–4 years of experience in urban planning or a related field.
Proficiency in GIS software (e.g., ArcGIS) and planning tools (e.g., Adobe InDesign, SketchUp).
Solid understanding of urban planning principles, zoning regulations, and land use policies.
Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
Ability to work independently with moderate supervision and engage with stakeholders effectively.
Familiarity with public engagement and community development processes.
Physical Requirements:
Ability to work in an office environment utilizing computer equipment and software.
May require frequent site visits or attendance at community meetings, which involve walking, climbing stairs, and navigating uneven terrain.
Capable of lifting and carrying materials weighing up to 25 pounds (e.g., planning documents, presentation materials).
Adequate vision and hearing abilities to effectively communicate with team members and stakeholders.
Possession of a valid driver’s license and ability to travel to project sites or community meetings as necessary.
